    McKinney Vento Homeless Food Pantry

I would like to be part of helping your child learn to give back. There are many ways that all of us can look beyond ourselves to assist others. The food pantry is a way to do so and makes an impact right here in our community. There are families within 5 miles that may not have food to eat and they go to the food pantry for assistance. Your child can help by bringing in a food item. Jon Matson who runs the pantry will come and thank the students personally and explain what he does and how the pantry helps homeless families. This is a way for our class to give back and the assistance stays close to home. Please send as many food items as you can at any time throughout the year. I have a box in the classroom to deposit the food. We will get the food to the pantry in early November, early February and again at the end of May. In advance, I thank you for your generosity and helping to model giving back to your child.

Mrs. Bailey/Torres Choices Program http://aplcore.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=91:mrs-baileytorres-choices-program&catid=25:staff-pages&Itemid=29 http://aplcore.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=91:mrs-baileytorres-choices-program&catid=25:staff-pages&Itemid=29 Choices Program
In third grade I emphasize that much of what each of us does is a "choice". Your child can choose to listen, they can choose to follow directions, and they can choose to do their very best work... and from this concept comes the choices program. If your child is having difficulty listening, being respectful, doing their homework, playing appropriately on the playground, etc... then they will receive a choice slip from me. This slip will indicate what mistake your child made that day. I will talk with your child to find out what happened and counsel them on a better "choice" they can make, The choice slip goes home and needs to be signed by you after you and your child have discussed what happened and I hope that you too will counsel them on what they could do to make a better choice. Please send that choice slip, signed, back to school the following day. If your child receives a choice slip, they have simply made an error in judgment and it is not the end of the world. We all make mistakes with the hope of learning from them. These choice slips are recorded on the Conduct Folder which is sent home every Thursday for you to initial. If your child has any missing assignments, they need to be completed and turned in the following day. Thanks for your cooperation and working with me to emphasize good citizenship and study skills each day.

Mrs. Bailey/Torres Multiplication Facts http://aplcore.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=90:mrs-baileytorres-multiplication-facts&catid=25:staff-pages&Itemid=29 http://aplcore.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=90:mrs-baileytorres-multiplication-facts&catid=25:staff-pages&Itemid=29 Multiplication Facts

Your child is expected to master multiplication facts 0-10 by June with speed and accuracy. However, it is in your child’s best interest to master these facts by January so that they are ready when we start the division chapters. Division comes alter the first of the year.

Your child will take a "banana split" multiplication test each day which is timed for 2 1/2 minutes. They take the fact test that they are currently working on. For example, if they take the times 3 test and pass it with 100% in 2 1/2 minutes, then they take the times 4 test. They move consecutively through times 10 and then take a mixed multiplication facts test. There is a district math mastery test for third grade that is timed and has all the multiplication facts mixed on one page. You will see this score on their report card.

I have found that the best way for students to study is to use flash cards and pull out the cards (or make from paper) the facts that the student is currently working on. If their "banana split" is times 3, your child should practice only the times 3 cards. This practice needs to happen each night. We do not practice multiplication facts at all in class.

    Mrs. Bailey/Torres Homework http://aplcore.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89:mrs-baileytorres-homework&catid=25:staff-pages&Itemid=29 http://aplcore.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=89:mrs-baileytorres-homework&catid=25:staff-pages&Itemid=29 Homework

In third grade I give homework Monday through Thursday. The homework is due back the following day. This is a deliberate choice. I work hard on building independence and responsibility in class so I expect that your child will meet this daily deadline. Along with this effort to build responsibility, I will not be posting homework on this website. Your child should be practicing writing all homework in the reminder binder and checking off that all assignments are complete each evening. Homework is an important reinforcement for skills taught each day. Your child needs to complete his/her homework in order to practice and master the curriculum. Your child should be able to do the homework given on his own. Of course, if they need help regarding the directions for the assignment, please assist them. Once all homework is complete, I ask that you check the homework and with your child, tix any mistakes they make. My expectation is that homework comes back to class 100% correct. Your one to one assistance correcting the work will lead to better results for your child’s learning. As far as homework over the weekend, that is a family decision. lf you think that your child needs extra time studying multiplication or vocabulary words then the weekend may be the time to do so. If your child is a struggling reader, please have them read over the weekend to help improve their skills in this area.

I came to Placentia from the East Whittier City School District, and began my teaching career in the Fullerton School District. I truly believe there is no better, or more fulfilling profession than educating children.

It has been my privilege to work with the Brookhaven community for the past four years and now begin my fifth year. Watching children learn and grow from sweet little five year olds in Kindergarten and then flourish into mature young people as they leave sixth grade, and move on to middle school is a joy.
